Asolva PARTNERS WITH CDC TO COMBAT ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE
December 20, 2011Pasadena, CA - Through a close partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Asolva has developed Medici AU – the first commercially-available software solution on the market that conforms to CDC’s days of therapy (DOT) rules for monitoring antimicrobial usage. Medici AU enables hospitals to understand and benchmark their antimicrobial use across their patient care areas or between other hospitals when submitting their data to CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).
CDC considers antibiotic resistance as one of the world’s most pressing health problems. "Antibiotics are essential to combat life-threatening bacterial infections," says Dr. Thomas Frieden, Director of CDC. "Unfortunately, misuse of antibiotics is widespread and contributes to resistance. We have to better promote appropriate use of antibiotics to preserve these life-saving tools." Antibiotic resistance is considered to be a global health threat with no "boundaries". Dr. Margaret Chan, Director General at the World Health Organization (WHO), says, "The world is heading towards a post-antibiotic era, in which many common infections will no longer have a cure and, once again, kill unabated. The implications go beyond a resurgence of deadly infections to threaten many other life-saving and life-prolonging interventions, like cancer treatments, sophisticated surgical operations and organ transplantations. With hospitals the hotbeds for highly-resistant pathogens, such procedures become hazardous." Medici AU is designed to be vendor-neutral, connecting to virtually any hospital electronic medical records (EMR) system with minimal IT cost and involvement. A hospital will not need to later purchase and be locked into a more expensive solution from their EMR vendor in order to participate in CDC’s Antimicrobial Use and Resistance Option. In addition, Medici AU analyzes medication administration record (MAR) data, which is superior and more accurate than using other data sources such as drug purchases, physician prescriptions, pharmacy order entries, or patient billings. Asolva is currently working with CDC to help bring hospitals across different states onto the Medici AU NHSN antimicrobial use reporting platform. Joe Chuong, Product Manager at Asolva, says, "We are proud to be partners with CDC and their 'Get Smart on Antibiotics' initiative to address the growing issue of antimicrobial resistance. Medici AU integrates easily into any hospital’s antimicrobial stewardship program and facilitates the extensive reporting of antimicrobial use data to CDC."
